Our definition of diversity is informed by the definition included in the University of Wyoming's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Mission Statement. However, we collectively considered who was included in and excluded from this statement and modified our definition to be as inclusive as we are able to be within the bounds of our knowledge. We acknowledge that no definition of diversity can ever be static for new identities evolve and/or become recognized over time. We define diversity as the full array of individual differences we all have in regards to ability, age, country of origin, culture, economic class, educational background, ethnicity, gender identity, immigration status, political affiliation, race, religion, sexual orientation, veteran status, ubranism/ruralism, neurodiversity, mental and physical health status, language and linguistic ability, mobility, sensory or perceptual ability, political belief, worldview, and the unique ways in which identities may intersect. Diversity includes everyone and individuals of all identities must facilitate the expansion of a welcoming and nurturing environment for discovery, inquiry, and learning. In our definition of diversity, we also acknowledge that while every individual adds important diversity, individuals and groups with certain identities have been systematically oppressed, shamed and punished. The historical trauma caused by this has created an inequitable landscape that requires action in the interest of the oppressed in order to move towards equity.
